Samson and Rachel
Samson Mogusu and his wife Rachel Ateya are from Kenya. They both grew up on farms; growing foods for their own consumption and to sell in local markets. Samson and Rachel grow different types of vegetables, root crops, and corn.
When they moved to America, they dreamed to have a small garden to grow their own food. This was their dream because they knew most of the food they eat comes from gardens. They had been farming in Northfield for a couple of years before finding Sharing Our Roots through a friend. They were excited to apply to join the farmer cohort to have a space to grow their own food. Sharing Our Roots was a great fit because organic farming is a strong value for them as small farmers. They also were interested because of our trainings related crop planning and care for organic produce as well as our network support linking farmers to government programs that help small scale farmer increase their productivity.
This year Samson and Rachel had limited capacity to grow so their production was sold to individuals and families and the rest was reserved for their families’ consumption.
“We believe that we are in the best place, and we plan to grow healthy organic vegetables and other organic farm produce for the available markets and also increase our productivity”.
