Executive Co-Director (Development Lead)

Position: 1.0 FTE (40 hrs/week)
Hours: Monday-Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm, occasional evenings and weekends
Location: 205 S. Water St., Suite 10, Northfield (Office), occasional visits to the farm (4905 315th St. W., Northfield) with some opportunity for remote work

Sharing Our Roots (SOR) is a 501(c)3 non-profit and 163-acre farm in Northfield, Minn., dedicated to advancing a resilient agriculture system that demonstrates the power to heal our lands, nourish our communities, and prepare emerging farmers.

Over the past two years, SOR has increased its personnel and acreage and expanded its programming. SOR is now seeking a Development Lead to sustain and further this growth through additional fundraising, resource development and brand awareness. The Development Lead will serve as Executive Co-Director of SOR (alongside the Operations and Finance Lead) and as a member of the Executive, Finance, and Development Committees.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Executive Co-Directorship:

  • Lead the organization towards its mission by maintaining a culture of open communication and collaboration, and keeping Sharing Our Roots’ justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI) principles at the forefront. 

  • Work with the Operations & Finance Lead to create budgets, monitor and forecast revenue and expenses, complete an annual audit, and drive financial results.

  • Co-lead the organization’s annual strategic planning with SOR staff and board.

  • Meet regularly with Program Managers to identify and respond to program needs.

Development Lead:

Development Strategy:

  • Lead bi-weekly Development Committee meetings and prepare agendas and materials.

  • Create and implement an annual fundraising plan for SOR’s $1.6 million budget; monitor and report results to the Board of Directors.

Annual Giving, Major Gifts, and Grants:

  • Lead the planning and execution of a capital campaign to begin in 2025.

  • Work with the Development Committee to design and implement a giving program to grow SOR’s list of major gift donors and donor retention.

  • Write proposals with a major focus on securing large  ($100K+) general operating and program-specific grants (i.e. family foundations, corporate, government).

  • Collaborate with the Grants Assistant in grant seeking, tracking, and reporting; writing LOIs, thank you letters, and annual appeal letters. 

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with program officers and new funders through regular check-ins and invitations to the SOR Farm.

Communications and Community Partnerships:

  • Work with the Communications Lead to increase brand visibility and recognition for SOR, support the communications strategy, and the creation of an annual impact report.

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with SOR farmers, gardeners, and community partners.

  • Serve as an ambassador for SOR through public speaking engagements.

Supervision:

Serve as co-supervisor to the Administrative and Grants Assistant. Hire and oversee the work of development consultants.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Fluent in oral and written English

  • Preference given to candidates fluent in oral and written Spanish.

  • A bachelor’s degree and/or 5+ years in leadership, development, fundraising and grant-writing.

  • Proven budget management skills (preparation, analysis, decision-making, reporting).

  • Strong organizational, analytical, creative thinking, and problem-solving skills.

  • Interpersonal and intercultural communication skills that contribute to a collaborative work environment with staff, board, and other stakeholders.

  • Familiarity with and interest in U.S. and Minnesota food systems, racial equity work, food sovereignty, environmental justice efforts, and community-based organizations.

  • Experience working in and leading teams with cultural and linguistic diversity.

  • Sensitivity and responsiveness to BIPOC, immigrant, and LGBTQ+ lived experiences and historical trauma.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.

  • Must live in the Northfield area or be willing to commute as needed.

Work Environment: This is a hybrid remote/in-person position. Maintaining work hours reflective of office hours (Monday-Friday, 9 am - 5 pm) is preferable. SOR will provide the technology necessary to complete job duties both remotely and on-site.

Physical Demands: This is a computer/office work-based role; however, occasional physical demands could include helping with office organization and preparing for events. This requires the ability to carry 20-60 pounds.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

Expected Salary: $70,720 - 74,880 (BOE)

Salaries are paid on a bi-weekly basis. All payments are subject to mandatory employment deductions (state and federal taxes, social security and Medicare).
